Rilla of Ingleside (1921) is the eighth of nine books in the Anne of Green Gables series by Lucy Maud Montgomery, but was the sixth "Anne" novel in publication order. This book draws the focus back onto a single character, Anne and Gilbert's youngest daughter Bertha Marilla "Rilla" Blythe. It has a more serious tone, as it takes place during World War I and the three Blythe boys—Jem, Walter, and Shirley—along with Rilla's sweetheart Ken Ford, and playmates Jerry Meredith and Carl Meredith—end up fighting in Europe with the Canadian Expeditionary Force. The book is dedicated "To the memory of FREDERICA CAMPBELL MACFARLANE who went away from me when the dawn broke on January 25, 1919 -- a true friend, a rare personality, a loyal and courageous soul." Frederica, Maud's cousin and best friend, grew up in Park Corner, PEI, but died in the worldwide flu epidemic of 1918/19. Frederica may have been the model for Diana Barry, Anne of Green Gables' "bosom friend" both had unusual, non-Christian first names, and the fictional Diana's husband was named, perhaps not coincidentally, Fred.

This book is the eighth and last book of the Anne of Green Gables series. It is by far the most serious. World War I has broken out and Canadians are expected to volunteer to fight alongside their British counterparts. Rilla is the youngest of Anne's and Gilbert's six children. At the beginning of the war, she is too young to do very much in the war effort. All 3 of her brothers volunteer; not all come back. The story extends over the entire period of the war and ends at the end of the war, as the soldiers are returning home, changed by the bloody conflict of which they have been a part. The people to whom they come home are changed as well. The book contains some of the rhapsodic prose of the earlier books, but the narrative is tempered by the harsh reality in which the characters find themselves.Product details

L.M. Montgomery offers a refreshing notch up on her writing as she extends far beyond her former sweet plots of her beloved Anne series! Placing the backdrop in a historic global event, through the eyes of history, we get a realistic portrayal of how life could have been at that moment of time as expressed through the development of the characters. The plot is interesting, intriguing, charming, informative, and entertaining as well.
Started slow...hard to believe Anne would have raised such a seemingly shallow child. Wasn’t sure if it’d improve after the war broke out, but the war baby brought out the influence of Anne on her daughter. I really didn’t like how Montgomery portrayed Anne in the book, She didn’t seem her character. I suppose the author wanted Rilla to be the focus, but it was a shame there wasn’t more quality interaction between Anne and Rilla.
An avid fan of Anne in all her books, I was hesitant at first to read a book in which Anne is not the main character. However, "Rilla of Ingleside" is an enchanting book that perfectly captures the transition from spoiled child into an intelligent and selfless young woman. Set during the first world war, it shows what life was like for the many women who had to stay at home and find different ways to be patriots for their country while the men were off giving theirs. Themes of love, loss, conflict, growth, and bravery come together perfectly in this final installment in the series.
My mother grew up on the Anne of Green Gables books, and in the final years of her life, I gave them to her in a set. After her death, I read the books, and this last one is something of a minor masterpiece. It talks about the young men from Prince Edward Island going off to World War I, with the tensions and sadness of the folks back home well portrayed. I strongly recommend the book; Rilla is the youngest daughter of Anne. Montgomery was a very good writer, and the sorrow of the war years is vividly caught. Go for it!
Classics are called such for a reason, and "Rilla of Ingleside" is as classic as you can get. I have read it many times, and each one only makes me love it more. I grew up reading about Anne Shirley and her exploits, and this final novel in the "Anne of Green Gables" series spotlights Anne's daughter Rilla and her coming of age years.
Rilla is 14 when the book opens, and her mother is a little worried about Rilla's lack of ambition in life, noting from the first chapter that "She has no serious ideals at all - her sole aspiration seems to be to have a good time." There's no doubt that Rilla's a touch vain and perhaps a mite spoiled, but she is girl who goes through an incredible overhaul of character through these pages.
I've read a great many books and sampled the writing of many different authors through the years, but there is something spellbinding about Lucy Maud Montgomery's way of storytelling. You feel the characters. Their joys, sorrows, struggles, and triumphs become your own. Your imagination is stirred with the slightest turns of phrase. Montgomery is a true master. Her characters will live in the hearts of readers until the end of time.
The first real grown-up party Rilla is allowed to attend happens to be on August 4, 1914. The party is interrupted when the news breaks that England has declared war on Germany, and as a part of the British Empire at that time, Canadian lads would be called upon to go forth and fight. As Rilla watches her brothers and friends go war and becomes part of the war effort on the home front herself, the seriousness and sacrifice of wartime life affect Rilla deeply. She finds the strength to rise to the occasion, even in things she despises. It's the joy of seeing Rilla grow into a woman whose inner loveliness matches her outer beauty that makes me love her so. Rilla is a true heroine.
This book is also valuable for the insight it provides into World War I and the lives of the everyday people it impacted. As a history lover, this adds to my enjoyment of the novel. But it's Rilla herself who brings me back time and again, to laugh and cry and hope (and cry some more!) with her and all the Blythe gang through this incredibly journey.
My wife suggested I read Anne of Green Gables, as she had fond memories reading it in her youth. I have enjoyed the entire series, but doing a bit of research on Lucy Montgomery discovered the pure happiness of life in her characters was sadly lacking in her own life. Lucy was cheated by her original publisher out of thousands of dollars and had to resort to a lengthy lawsuit to win some of the profits she was entitled to. In addition, she married a minister who became deeply depressive, which over time dragged herself into depression, for which she was taking drugs which eventually caused her own death. Her daughter suggested her death by overdose might have been deliberate. While her own story was tragic it might be uplifting to know that in spite of adversity Lucy rose above it all to create uplifting characters and relationships so memorable to others. In conclusion, I wish I had known Lucy Montgomery as one of her "kindred spirits".
